Key Achievements
- Tech lead across API gateway and service-mesh infrastructure for 20+ product teams and hundreds of engineers spanning AWS, GCP, and on-prem. During a platform generation change, I owned three concurrent gateway systems — deliberately running old and new in parallel, accepting double operational load as the trade-off for never forcing a big-bang migration on product teams.
- Architected an Istio/Envoy gateway platform with shared AuthN/AuthZ components in Go, serving ~1B requests/month against an internal latency target of <65ms. Centralizing AuthN/AuthZ in shared components traded some per-team flexibility for consistent security posture and no duplicated auth logic across services.
- Led the evaluation of Kong vs Gloo vs Istio/Envoy and drove adoption of the open platform over vendor alternatives costing more than €300k annually — trading vendor support contracts for open-source ownership, in-house expertise, and no licensing ceiling as traffic grew.
- Made SLOs self-service: OpenTelemetry instrumentation enabled ~20 teams to own their SLOs and debug production independently, instead of routing every investigation through the platform team. The trade-off was upfront instrumentation effort across the mesh; the consequence was a platform team that stopped being an incident bottleneck.
- Cut observability spend ~€70k/year (≥60%) by reworking logging pipelines and retention — deliberately preserving incident-recovery capability rather than chasing maximum savings.
- Executed zero-downtime migrations: a 3-layer Akamai DNS migration for a payments monolith across prod/staging/test, and a clean decommission of the legacy GraphQL gateway (audit usage, migrate teams, shut down) with no disruption to dependent services.
- Contributed upstream to the open-source projects the platform depends on: autocannon and Istio.
Technical Impact
The outcome was a single open, self-service platform: 20+ teams ship on shared Istio/Envoy gateway infrastructure with their own SLOs, the company avoided more than €300k/year in vendor spend while cutting observability costs by ~€70k/year, and the legacy gateway generation was retired without downtime.
